The work observation that I had in the restaurant called Csülök Csárda was a nice experience for me. I learnt multiple things while I spent 8 hours there. For instance, that setting invoices could take way more time than I expected, that private offers also play a huge role in their business, that accounting is harder than I thought and that making schedules for the workers can be really tricky. Anyone can get sick last moment or have any kind of issue that could affect their work life and make them miss from work. This can mess up the whole planning which is the manager’s task to deal with. Every bigger problem is on the manager, it can be a really stressful job to do, you have to be really confident in this position.
However, I had some enjoyable moment while I was there. The best one for me was when I could work with Excel and use my knowledge that I learnt at campus in real life. It felt really natural for me, I was happy I kept up with the modules during the semester. On the other hand, the least enjoyable part of the day was when I had to sit in one place for longer than I expected. Staring at the computer for a long time and not moving my legs can make me sometimes unmotivated. Besides these things I can consider myself having a manager job in the future, but not totally the same kind that I saw on my company observation. I consider myself to work in a more creative company in the future, not that I say this is not a good job, but everyone has their own preferences.
Talking about the IBM learning outcomes, I could link a few to my manager’s job. Firstly, this manager needs to describe and critically analyse business and organisational processes, and apply these insights independently in function of efficient and effective business management. Secondly, she needs to be able to actively contribute to the realization of the (strategic) goals of the company/organisation in an open-minded manner. Thirdly, she is able to collect, analyse, interpret and evaluate scientific and contextual quantitative/qualitative data independently, do professionally report on this and formulate recommendations based on their findings while demonstrating a critical and inquisitive attitude. Furthermore, she can enterprise, work independently, systematically and accurately and use a solution-oriented, creative and innovative approach to optimise business processes in a creative and innovative way. Moreover, she acts in an ethical, sustainable, deontological and socially responsible manner. Nevertheless, she acts in a customer and service-oriented way, develops networks independently. Lastly, she is taking responsibility in various tasks and roles within a company and taking responsibility for her own professional development.
By revising my strengths from my SWOT analysis, I could see that all of them match my job competencies. My first strengths are industry, diligence and perseverance. All of these 3 are needed to be a manager, because if you are being lazy and give up easily you cannot lead a team. My second ones are fairness, equity and justice. In my opinion, these are also essential to do a good job as a manager. Without these personal traits as a manager you will make unfair decisions. Thirdly, honesty, authenticity, and genuineness, which also matches my job competency. Moreover, leadership, which is as long as I am concerned, is the most important one. You have to be someone who can lead a team, otherwise everything will go wrong in your company. And lastly, citizenship, teamwork, and loyalty. It is essential to also have these qualities as a manager who wants to do a great job.
The action points that could increase my employability for my future job would for sure contain working on my confidence. It is crucial to be confident in life, especially if you want to work as a manager. Also, handling stressful situations is a weakness of mine, I would like to work on it in the future. It is important to have as little stress in our life as possible. It can lead to an unhealthy lifestyle, a lot of people do not even realize how big problem is stress.
Furthermore, I do expect my IBM programme to prepare me for a function that I observed. We have a lot of learning outcomes in the programme that could be really helpful in the future. As a few examples, being a manager requires the ability to be able to describe and critically analyse business and organisational processes, and apply these insights independently in function of efficient and effective business management or to be able to collect, analyse, interpret and evaluate scientific and contextual quantitative/qualitative data independently, do professionally report on this and formulate recommendations based on their findings while demonstrating a critical and inquisitive attitude.
All in all, as long as I am concerned, this work and the manager observation did help in a lot of ways that I can use in the future. I am grateful that we had this opportunity as a student.
